Switching my thoughts back to the reason I’m up here, I search the ground for somewhere to hide my belongings. Being eagle-eyed has its benefits, about two miles from the compound I sight a small opening in the side of a densely forested cliff. I glance over my shoulder and drop out of the air stream to swoop down to the site. I drop the bag onto a small ledge before landing. Once on my feet, I gather it in my beak and move forward toward the small opening.
It appears nothing else has taken up residence. It’s too high for most creatures which could be a threat, but after shifting back to my human form, I tentatively move forward.
The opening is small but large enough for me to squeeze through. Once inside, I stop, rooted to the spot, amazed with what I have found. It’s like a whole other world. Plants of every type bloom in the brightest of colors under the pale light of the moon. I hear the roar of water and venture forward, scanning around me for an ever-present danger. I find none.
My eyes widen when I come across a waterfall spilling into a crystal clear pool. The water is thunderous as it cascades over rocks, spray misting in every direction. It’s a magnificent sight. After hiding my bag under dense brush, I reluctantly leave this unspoiled paradise. There are more urgent priorities.

The sporadic green and brown patches of grass crunched under her feet as she made her way back to her car. Circling around it, she found what she was looking for but hoping not to find. The jagged, crushed, concave metal on the driver’s side was a jarring reality check.
